Somerville Public Library Foundation and SomerPromise introduce “Read and Grow” Partnership to Support Early Literacy
SOMERVILLE, MA – November 29, 2023 – The Somerville Public Library Foundation (SPLF) is proud to partner with SomerPromise, and the Somerville Family Learning Collaborative (SFLC) in supporting early literacy. Beginning now, tote bags filled with an assortment of books suitable for babies, a multilingual insert with tips for reading aloud to the very young, information about free library programs and services for children and families, and an application for a Somerville Public Library card are being delivered to Somerville families with newborns.
“We are delighted to partner with SomerPromise, and the Somerville Family Learning Collaborative to support early literacy,” said Kate Auspitz, of the Somerville Public Library Foundation. “We are especially eager to reach families who come from countries where free public libraries do not serve the people as they do here. This is a legacy we cherish and feel a responsibility to share.”
The Somerville Public Library Foundation recognizes the leadership of the American Library Association (ALA), and the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) in promoting early literacy. United for Libraries, a division of ALA, defines early literacy as the natural development of reading and writing skills through the enjoyment of books, the importance of positive interactions between babies and parents, and the critical role of literacy-rich experiences. The AAP has found that babies, toddlers, and preschoolers whose caregivers read to them regularly develop better language skills, speaking and listening, and arrive at school ready to learn. Moreover, frequent reading promotes bonding, and safe, stable, nurturing relationships.
“It’s my hope these totes will inspire a love of reading and libraries for our youngest Somervillians,” said Cathy Piantigini, Director of the Somerville Public Library. “I can’t wait to see them become a regular part of a child’s visit to the library.”
In addition to a gift of board books from Simon and Schuster, the SPLF also received a gift of durable baby books from SomerPromise, who are delivering the totes during their home visits to new families. "Encouraging the development of early literacy skills is an integral tool to achieve SomerPromise’s goal of ensuring our youngest residents thrive from cradle to career,” said SomerPromise Director, Chris Hosman. “This partnership with the Somerville Public Library and Foundation is a great example of the types of programs we can develop through cross-sector work. It will also serve the purpose of informing families about the SomerBaby home visiting program and numerous services available to them throughout the City."
